Heartland Health Services offers free lung health tests (Pulmonary Function Tests or PFTs) for everyone in Peoria and Tazewell counties. These tests are available at no cost, thanks to the Edwards Settlement grant.
What is the Edwards Settlement Grant?
The Edwards Settlement grant comes from a legal agreement meant to improve the health of people in Peoria and Tazewell counties. The funding from this grant helps us provide free services like lung health tests to everyone in our community. For more information, visit the Peoria City/County Health Department.
What is a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)?
A PFT is a simple test that checks how well your lungs work. It can help find problems like asthma or other breathing issues.
What to Expect
When you come for your test, our staff will help you through it. The test is easy and doesn’t take long. If the results show you need more care, we’ll refer you to a specialist. We also recommend that you keep track of your lung health with your Primary Care Provider (PCP).
- Breathe into a Tube: You'll be asked to take deep breaths and blow into a tube connected to a machine.
- Follow Instructions: The Respiratory Therapist Assistant will guide you on when to breathe in, hold your breath, and breathe out.
- Get Results: The machine will measure how well your lungs are working, and the results will be reviewed by a pulmonologist.
