Heartland Health Services is on a mission to provide affordable, high-quality health services and remove inequities to improve the lives of all. For more than 35 years, we have been a trusted source of compassionate, comprehensive healthcare, meeting people where they are and ensuring everyone has access to the care they deserve.

Heartland Community Health Clinic was officially incorporated on October 16, 1990, through the vision and determination of local healthcare leaders,

community advocates, and volunteers who recognized a critical gap in access to care. At the time, many individuals and families earned too much to qualify for Public Aid or Medicaid but could not afford health insurance or the cost of medical care.

Together, these community leaders established a nonprofit organization dedicated to filling that gap. Their vision was simple yet powerful: no one should have to go without healthcare because of their financial circumstances. That vision continues to guide Heartland Health Services today.

One year later, Heartland welcomed its first patients at 600 NE Monroe Street in Peoria, inside the former home of Bishop Edward W. O'Rourke. The Diocese leased the home to Heartland for just $1 per year, while anonymous community donations funded renovations to transform the residence into a medical clinic.

The clinic was built almost entirely through volunteerism. With only one paid staff member, physicians, specialists, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and administrative volunteers donated countless hours to provide medical care for uninsured members of the community. Medical equipment and supplies were donated, and Peoria's three hospitals partnered with Heartland by providing diagnostic testing and inpatient services at no cost to patients, rotating monthly to share the responsibility.

What began as a small volunteer-run clinic quickly became a symbol of what is possible when a community comes together to care for its neighbors.

                  On February 1, 2004, Heartland was designated a Federally Qualified Helth Center (FQHC), expanding our ability to provide comprehensive, affordable healthcare to underserved populations throughout Central Illinois.

From the beginning, our focus has remained on serving communities with the greatest need, including individuals and families with limited financial resources, people who are uninsured or underinsured, those experiencing homelessness, and populations facing barriers to care. Becoming an FQHC strengthened our ability to fulfill that mission while expanding services and improving access to care.

 Over the years, Heartland has grown from a single volunteer clinic into one of Central Illinois' leading community health centers. Today, we provide comprehensive healthcare services through multiple neighborhood locations across Peoria and Tazewell Counties.

Heartland Health Services continues to build healthier communities by delivering compassionate, high-quality healthcare close to home. With neighborhood health centers located where our patients live and work, we make it easier for individuals and families to access the care they need.

Beyond healthcare, Heartland connects patients with community resources, addresses social determinants of health, advocates for health access, and works alongside local organizations to improve the overall well-being of Central Illinois.

As a Gold Level Advocacy Center of Excellence (ACE), we take pride in leading efforts to expand healthcare opportunities. This designation, awarded by the National Association of Community Health Centers, recognizes our dedication to amplifying voices, strengthening our neighborhoods, and advocating for policies that support community health centers nationwide.
